Kurzfassung

Wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP) is a promising technology to defossilise the shipping industry and reduce dependency on volatile fuel prices, while ensuring an economic ship operation. Ships designed to primarily use wind propulsion can, in favourable conditions, travel at speeds higher than required by the routing or targeted arrival time. In such cases, hydrogenerators can salvage the excess energy to power the hotel load or for propulsion during periods of low wind. To form a compelling business case, it’s critical to correctly assess the ship’s and hydrogenator’s performance in realistic conditions. WASP ships operate at a constant drift and heel angle, which, combined with the hydrogenerator’s proximity to the hull, creates an oblique and highly inhomogeneous inflow. This paper evaluates the impact of realistic inflow conditions on the performance of a dual hydrogenerator system on a sailing cargo ship. Relevant operation conditions, based on long-term North Atlantic routing data, are modeled with RANSE-CFD to extract the complex flow field. These findings are then integrated into the QBlade turbine modeling software to simulate the actual turbine geometry and the flow around it. The research quantifies the differences in turbine power output and drag between a realistic, inhomogeneous flow field and a homogeneous one. This enables to efficiently assess the effect of realistic inflow, ensuring reliable performance prediction and consequently enables optimal generator placement.
