Kurzfassung

Remote operation - or teleoperation - of road vehicles is emerging globally as a critical enabler for safe, robustness, and scalable deployment of connected and automated transportation systems. In this context, remote operation refers to a case where a human remote operator located outside the vehicle supports operation of the vehicle remotely in situations when the vehicle reaches its operational limits.

In recent years, we have seen deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs) on public roads as robotaxi services, where the operation of robotaxis is often supported by remote operation systems to ensure safe operation of the AVs. For non-automated vehicles, remote operation is, e.g., used in the context of delivering vehicles to customers via remote driving. While technical developments have advanced forward through several field tests and research projects, there are several remaining research challenges related to systematic deployment of remote operations. Therefore, this workshop intends to initiate multi-disciplinary discussions in a common research arena on different components around remote operation of road transportation systems. This is the first workshop on the topic at ITSC following a workshop series on the same topic organized at IEEE IV since 2021. The workshop will include invited presentations, work-in-progress presentations, and a panel discussion.
