Kurzfassung
Photonic integrated circuits are a key technology in fiber-optic communications and are now emerging as promising candidates for optical satellite communications. However, the impact of space radiation and the necessary adaptations need to be better understood. Here, heavy ion strikes on silicon waveguides are simulated, and the effect of ionizing radiation on silicon nitride devices is experimentally explored. Furthermore, custom indium phosphide devices are developed with an external foundry.
