Kurzfassung
Diagnostics based on optically active coatings on surfaces for measurements in high-speed aerodynamics involves the development and application of temperature-sensitive paints (TSPs) and pressure-sensitive paints (PSPs). TSPs ultimately allow for the measurement of surface heat flux fields on test models and this is of importance in aerothermodynamic testing and applications. This is quickly becoming a widely-used measurement technique in hypersonic flow field investigations due to the current trend towards testing more complex geometries not given to dense instrumentation with conventional flush-mounted sensors. This discussion will cover the development and use of TSPs in the High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel Göttingen (HEG), demonstrating considerations and challenges which could potentially play a role when implementing this measurement technique at other short-duration hypersonic testing facilities. Additionally, the organizational aspects to consider and lessons learned during the development and testing new TSPs will be presented, with a view to potential collaboration.
