Kurzfassung
The heavy-duty vehicle market, especially for freight transport, is undergoing a significant change due to improvements in battery technology and charging times (<30 Minutes for 400 km), making battery electric trucks (BET) a viable option not only for distributional transport, but also for long distance haul in Europe (where truck drivers must pause for 45 minutes each 4.5 hours) and other regions. Heavy-duty vehicles account for roughly one-fourth of EU road transport emissions, which have been rising annually for the last 10 years. To meet climate-neutral objectives by 2050, a switch from internal combustion engines to BET will be mandatory. The increasing inclusion of freight transport measures and targets in Nationally Determined Contributions is also pointing to stronger commitments to develop and implement low carbon heavy duty vehicle technologies. Electrifying road transport offers numerous benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants, improved energy security, and lower operating costs. Additionally, BET can participate in grid services through bidirectional charging (v2g) technology, earning money and decreasing the total cost of ownership while improving power grid stability and security. This presentation gives a short introduction into this session.
