Kurzfassung
The formation of whistling tones within the nozzle throat is suspected to be a source of rocket nozzle exhaust jet noise. To study this tone formation, a set of orifice plates with varying geometries and diameters was tested, and compared with several convergent-divergent nozzles. The results confirmed the presence of distinct tones, formed in the orifice plates and the nozzle throats, which clearly correlated with the related diameter, respectively. The orifice plates demonstrated to serve as effective nozzle throat surrogates in respect to acoustic properties. In addition, a way was found to suppress the formation of whistling tones.
