Kurzfassung
Contribution to the Call for Evidence of the EU Ports Strategy: Digital traffic management represents the indispensable first step toward automation for small and medium-sized ports (SMPs) while simultaneously enabling immediate improvements in efficiency, sustainability, and economic viability. Critically, true transformation demands digitalization not only for truck (road) traffic but also for rail-based container flows and hinterland connections. Through intelligent sensor and control systems with 24/7 monitoring capabilities, multimodal cargo handling can be accelerated, environmental impact reduced, and the competitiveness of these critical logistics nodes secured. The concept integrates proven technologies such as IoT sensor networks, AI-powered multimodal coordination applications, and AnyLogic simulation software into a coherent system that serves as the technological foundation for future automation steps across all transport modes.
