Cross-Regional Comparisons of Automated Bus Deployment Strategies in Taiwan and Europe

Kurzfassung

This work compares automated bus initiatives in Taiwan and Europe, focusing on key dimensions such as regulatory frameworks, technical and operational conditions, stakeholder acceptance, data management and privacy, as well as integration with smart city infrastructures. Additionally, it considers promotional approaches and the overall implementation progress in both regions. Europe has progressively advanced automated bus technology through strategic planning, research, regulatory development, and pilot demonstrations, paving the way for smooth real-world deployment. These efforts and their outcomes, e.g. institutional frameworks and nuanced approaches to public engagement, provide valuable lessons and references for other regions, including Taiwan. In contrast, Taiwan’s approach has centered on sandbox projects, offering practical insights and helping to build public trust. However, the absence of formal regulatory frameworks may limit future scalability and international competitiveness. Nevertheless, Taiwan’s experiences remain insightful examples for countries facing similar regulatory gaps, underscoring the importance of both innovation and sound policy in advancing automated mobility.
