Abstract

The European Space Agency (ESA), together with industrial partners, is developing the Advanced Data Handling Architecture (ADHA), a standardized and modular avionics framework for satellite missions. To support this initiative, we propose a dedicated Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodology tailored to the development of ADHA units and modules. Building on ESA’s SysML Solution and leveraging SysML v2 and the SysIDE toolchain, the approach extends existing frameworks to address ADHA-specific modeling needs, such as modular avionics design, supplier interoperability, and lifecycle traceability. A prototype model is being developed for the ADHA Unit and core On-Board Computer, Mass Memory, and Power modules to demonstrate the feasibility of the method. The proposed MBSE framework aims to improve consistency, enable automation of key artifacts such as Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and SWaP budgets, and reduce engineering effort by providing a single source of truth across stakeholders. Ultimately, this work demonstrates how a tailored MBSE solution can accelerate ADHA development, foster reuse, and promote digital continuity in a multi-supplier ecosystem.
