Kurzfassung
Federation is a useful property of software systems in contexts that require high levels of autonomy and heterogeneity among subsystems. However, available design frameworks for federation are domain-specific or do not cover a wide enough space of design possibilities. This can lead to problems during the software design phase such as inefficient communication and increased design efforts. In this paper we offer a general design space for federation in software systems to alleviate these issues. We arrived at our contribution by way of Design Science Research and validated it with case studies of two social media applications, which we have placed within the design space. We conclude that the design space can be effectively used to delineate federated from non-federated software systems, which demonstrates its applicability as a design framework that conceptualizes general software federation.
