Abstract

A new short duration internal force balance to measure lift, pitching moment and drag has been designed, calibrated and tested. The balance is able to measures forces of the order of milliseconds with instrumented models up to 40º angle of attack. Tests were performed in the High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel Göttingen on a 303 mm long 10º half angle blunted cone at angles of attack up to 20º. The tests were conducted at two test conditions corresponding to a Mach number of 7.8 and total enthalpies of 3.0 and 3.5 MJ/kg. Good agreement with theoretical estimates based on computational fluid dynamics was obtained.
