Abstract

Responsive space refers to satellite architectures, ground infrastructure and back-up assets that enable the rapid replacement of critical space-borne capabilities within days. Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) offers two main benefits for responsive space: its "self-clean" ability and the low altitude itself. It offers an operational space, where debris cannot accumulate, regardless of the pollution in Low Earth Orbit or the cause that harmed critical space-based infrastructure. This comes at the cost of constant atmospheric drag on the spacecraft. The low altitude allows for the use of more compact instruments and, therefore, smaller platforms, without performance reduction compared to LEO. This paper analyzes the role of VLEO satellites in supporting responsive space capabilities. It categorizes VLEO systems into four categories and presents an analysis of the scenario-dependent benefits of these platforms, including their impact on military deterrence and the reduction of space debris.
