Abstract

Accurate measurements of direct normal irradiance (DNI) and diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) are required in solar energy projects at various stages. Several rather simple, i.e. economic and robust, measurement systems for DNI and DHI are available on the market. However, such sensors can yield large deviations under various atmospheric conditions, or be susceptible to soiling or user mistakes. DLR recently developed the novel PyranoCam measurement system of DNI and DHI. The system is based on a pyranometer and an all-sky imager. Its measurement combines a physics-based and data-driven method. This publication provides detailed insights into PyranoCam's working principle. The publication also compares the system's accuracy to the ones of state-of-the-art measurement systems.
