Abstract

Prefilming airblast atomisers with different prefilmer lengths are studied. Short exposure background shadowgraphy is used to observe the liquid sheet breakup process. The spray distribution was measured with a 2D PDA system. Different mechanisms of liquid sheet breakup are observed as the Weber number is changed. At high Weber numbers, the liquid sheet breakup of prefilming airblast atomiser is different from the investigated nonprefilming airblast atomiser. At high ambient pressure, there is also an influence of the prefilmer length on the sheet breakup. 2D PDA measurements show that the mean SMD is also affected by prefilmer length.
