Abstract
Interplanetary space is dominated by radiation from protons, electrons, ions, and photons, making it a key environmental factor. While material qualification has focused on individual radiation sources, synergistic testing remains largely unexplored. This study builds on prior research into proton /electron radiation and VUV interactions. Though interactions between energetic particles and artificial light sources have been examined, the effects of dual irradiation with protons and electrons remain a significant knowledge gap. Additionally, low-energy particles, despite their prevalence in the solar system, require further study. The primary objectives of this research encompass demonstrating the feasibility of dual source irradiation with protons and electrons and concurrently augmenting the understanding of the interactions and processes unfolding when materials undergo simultaneous exposure to these particles. To achieve these objectives, the study leverages the capabilities of the Complex Irradiation Facility (GIF) to conduct simultaneous irradiation of materials with protons and electrons. Building upon former research that subjected solar sails to proton irradiation [1], a methodical comparative analysis between dual source and single source irradiation is undertaken, drawing upon well-documented outcomes to provide a robust basis for the study. The findings of this study not only present best practices for establishing dual source irradiation setups but also identify operational constraints, explore synergistic effects within the GIF and on materials. The investigation delves into the processes inherent in these interactions, conducting in-situ examinations to contribute insights to the scientific discourse.
