Abstract

This paper provides a brief history of engineering resilience and its application in critical infrastructures. A risk assessment considers how to prevent incidents from occurring. Protection focuses on stopping a threat or absorbing its impact. While resilience includes these aspects, resilience assessment must also take into account recovery actions after an incident. In a holistic assessment, all these aspects of resilience must be considered. The paper provides an introduction and evaluation of how methods can be used for assessing different aspects of resilience. A holistic coverage of these aspects can only be achieved through a combination of different methods. The paper provides various examples on how these different methods have been used for assessing infrastructure resilience. Due to the authors’ background and familiarity with the topic, the majority of the examples consider maritime infrastructures.
