Abstract

The introduction of electrified propulsion systems for civil aircraft implies significant advancements, offering not only a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, but also a marked decrease in perceived noise levels, thus enhancing passenger comfort and reducing the impact on communities near airports. Electrified aircraft allows for various measures of noise reduction. By design, electric aero engines enable, among others, steeper angles of takeoff and approach as well as reduced thrust at takeoff or delayed deceleration during approach, consequently suggesting a potential reduction of noise emissions of the aircraft in the vicinity of airports. Subsequent to a general review of noise reduction measures in electrified aviation, this study exemplarily discusses the effect of reduced jet noise and the noise reduction achievable with reduced approach idle thrust. The results illustrate how the noise emission levels in the area below the path of approach of the aircraft can be reduced, demonstrating the noise reduction potential inherent to electrified propulsion systems.
