Abstract

The SHOW Project conducted large-scale trials of automated vehicles in 20 open-traffic and 4 controlled environments. These pilot sites ranged from Madrid in Spain to Tampere in Finland, with 72 vehicles involved in transporting more than 160,000 passengers. These trials generated considerable volumes of data, evidence and experience regarding service operation, business models and the reality of integrating automated vehicles into Public Transport, Demand-Responsive Transport, Mobility as a Service, and Logistics as a Service schemes.

Alongside the real-life trials, SHOW has employed extensive traffic simulations, to: - Enhance real-world pilot experiments by providing additional support and insights; - Test complex or risky traffic scenarios that are difficult to replicate in actual field trials; - Generate data for impact assessments to aid future planning of Connected, Cooperative, and Automated Mobility (CCAM); - Simulate network effects of pilot vehicles.

The SHOW Simulation Suite was developed to carry out simulations on three primary simulation levels: (i) street-level, (ii) city-level, and (iii) simulations of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) in local areas. The Suite gathers all relevant data and information from each pilot site, allowing for deeper insights into the sites, providing indicators that are difficult to measure in real-world settings, and facilitating comparisons between actual and simulated data.
