Abstract

This Design report presents the development and validation of a “cryo-imaging” test bed, which will be a useful tool in the development of type V liquid hydrogen storage tank technology. Beginning with an in-depth study about the importance of the adoption of hydrogen as a fuel, the report further explains the relevance of type V liquid hydrogen storage tanks. This leads to the introduction of crack formation, in CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic) samples when exposed to cryogenic temperatures, which need to be investigated further and would be greatly aided by the introduction of the cryo-imaging test bed. Drawing on the information gathered in a comprehensive state-of-the-art study, the full conceptual design process from requirements to system breakdown to morphological chart, is described. To support the decisions made in the morphological chart, numerous relevant pretests are conducted and documented, along with their impact on the final design. The final design is presented with its most prevalent features, after which the validation test is described, and the validity and functionality of the system is demonstrated. In conclusion, the cryo-imaging test bed developed over the course of this project has proven to appropriately satisfy the requirements set out in the beginning and is ready to become a pivotal tool in the endeavour to better understand cracking behaviour in CFRP liquid hydrogen storage tanks. Furthermore, the report gives the recommendation to further improve on the design by adding a heating system and making a non-pressurized cryo-block.
