Abstract
A shortage of air traffic control officers (ATCO) is currently being experienced in the civil aviation sector. To address this challenge, a potential solution is to optimize the usage of human resources by enabling a single individual to control a single sector of the upper airspace. In order to achieve this level of capability, it is necessary for the human ATCO to be supported by a digital controller. In order to facilitate simultaneous operation in the same sector, an interface for the digital controller is required. The objective of this master's thesis is to develop an evaluation method for comparing the efficiency and usability of different digital controller user interfaces. This thesis utilizes an evaluation method comprising two distinct stages. The first stage comprises an expert workshop, while the second stage involves an evaluation of a prototype in selected scenarios that exemplify critical actions. This evaluation is supported by the collection of eye-tracking data and the administration of a questionnaire. The findings of both evaluation phases were analyzed and revealed that the interface must be incorporated into the primary display currently utilized by the ATCO. Moreover, the digital controller's planned actions should be visually explained to the ATCO for confirmation of the selected solution like the solution “Prognose” does. The results should be used in a human in the loop simulation to analyze the interfaces in a live traffic environment.
