Abstract

The typical configuration of an axial turbine for aircraft propulsion systems consists of alternating stator and rotor rows. In an alternative turbine configuration, one or more stator rows are removed. The turbine preliminary design toolkit of the DLR Turbine department includes a 1D meanline tool where an initial geometry of the turbine is generated and optimized for design point conditions, obtained from a 0D engine performance model. The generated turbine geometry is used as input for a 2D throughflow tool where design and off-design performance can be calculated. The output of this throughflow tool may be processed to generate a turbine performance map. These tools are applied to statorless turbine configurations to investigate their impact at different locations in the turbine and for different use cases.
