Abstract

In today’s interconnected world, crises unfold across a complex web of dependencies, rendering the notion of isolated occurrences obsolete. Traditional simulation frameworks often operate in isolation, focusing on individual infrastructure components without considering the intricate dependencies between the different infrastructures. This bachelor thesis enhances the NEXUS Simulation Framework by integrating a traffic simulation component. The NEXUS Simulation Framework was previously limited to the domains of water and energy. The integration of traffic is crucial for accurately modeling urban mobility and its interdependencies with other critical infrastructure systems. The integration method involved developing scenario models for the traffic simulation, modifying the Scenario Manager and the NEXUS Simulator, as well as implementing the urban traffic simulation using SUMO (Simulation of Urban MObility) and TAPAS (Travel Activity Pattern Simulation) data. Challenges included ensuring scalability and performance, managing data formats, and establishing location-based dependencies between traffic and other infrastructures. The results demonstrate the framework’s new capability to simulate urban traffic and its interdependencies with other infrastructures, as evidenced by the Blackout in Darmstadt scenario.
