Kurzfassung
The paper provides a detailed description of the exploratory Single Pilot Operations (SPO) simulator study as well as a preliminary qualitative evaluation of the study results. This study was performed in December 2021 as part of the DLR project NICo (Next Generation Intelligent Cockpit). The aim is to scientifically assess the feasibility of SPO for airline operations by identifying the related challenges and potential showstoppers. The main task of the study was to investigate the impact of the spatial separation of the two crew members on their communication, problem-solving and decision-making ability. One crew member was located in the Airbus A320 cockpit of DLR’s Air Vehicle Simulator (AVES) whereas the working place of the other crew member was built up outside of the simulator cockpit.
