Kurzfassung
The Earth's magnetosphere is a significant moderator of energetic particle populations as it shields, traps and even accelerates them. This talk will introduce the main interactions of energetic particles with the magnetosphere. Given that the magnetosphere is a complex and very dynamic environment this typically includes drastic population changes and spatial variations. In the second part we will investigate how the particles translate down into the atmosphere and get stopped. In addition to the theoretical basics of the near-Earth environment we will get some insights of precipitating particle modeling which is a major source of ionization in the upper atmosphere. Finally the recent challenges in precipitating particle modeling will be discussed.
