Abstract

In this chapter we present and discuss technical and operational requirements and practical usages of electrochemical power sources in battery electric rail vehicles and in hydrogen fuel-cell electric rail vehicles. Powertrain layouts, technical properties and common components are described. Typical use-cases are outlined for a variety of vehicle types, namely battery electric and fuel cell hydrogen electric multiple units, mainline locomotives, shunting locomotives, streetcars and other vehicles. For both battery-electric and fuel-cell electric trains the main technical challenges are discussed. For fuel-cell electric trains these are mainly on-board-storage, hydrogen availability, refueling and energy efficiency and costs. For battery electric vehicles the main technical challenges are recharging, autonomy ranges, recharging loads and C-rates and stress on the providing energy grid. The technology fit is discussed for both technologies for different world regions. Keywords: Alternative power train; Battery; Fuel cell; Hydrogen; Locomotives; Multiple units; Railway
