Abstract

We are working on developing a laser-based explosive trace detection system for screening passengers or visitors at security check points. The system uses UV Raman spectroscopy and midinfrared reflection spectroscopy to check the surface of people's shoes for traces of explosives. Detection results are displayed immediately completing the entire screening process within a few seconds. The application scenario demands that the system should not only be sensitive but also fast and reliable. Additional factors that have to be considered during system development are varying environmental factors, for example the vast number of different shoe materials, interference from non-hazardous substances or external light conditions. These challenges are discussed and detection results of selected explosives are presented.
