Abstract

Aircraft sub-scale models, as used in the scope of the Experimental Investigation of the Effect of Rear-Fuselage Shape on Ditching Behavior (NACA Technical Note 2929) were investigated in numerical ditching simulations using the Finite Pointset Method (FPM) with the VPS Software. The description of each shape was transfer to the standardized aircraft data schema CPACS. This was used for FE model generation using the structural modelling and design tool PANDORA. After defining reference parameters for ditching simulations with sub-scale representations, FPM simulations were conducted using most of the models of the NACA report. In addition to the analysis of the kinematics of the models during ditching the pressure time history was also investigated for different velocities. Furthermore, additional parametric studies on the data transfer from sub-scale to full-scale models, using the principle of the dynamic similitude, were conducted at various scales.
