Abstract

In this study, Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) are performed for transitional shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions (SWBLIs) on a flat plate at Mach 6 for impinging-shock angles of 12.4° and 13.0°. A first mode oblique breakdown transition scenario is forced in the simulations by disturbing the boundary-layer flow upstream of the SWBLI. The boundary-layer transition in the SWBLI region is influenced by the amplitude of the artificial disturbances. The skin-friction and the heat-transfer rate at the wall affected by SWBLIs are analyzed. For the given scenario, the transition can be forced by an oblique breakdown mechanism with reasonable perturbation amplitudes. However, higher amplitudes are necessary to trigger rapid shock induced transition to fully turbulent flow.
