Abstract
This thesis describes the development and evaluation of a virtual reality (VR) training environment designed to prepare test subjects for participation in road safety research studies on a bicycle simulator. The objective is to provide a short, standardized, and efficient training program for the bicycle simulator to increase the acceptance while minimizing potential negative effects, such as simulator sickness. In order to achieve this, a training environment was developed that makes use of gamification elements with the intention of improving training results and reducing any negative effects. Two versions of the simulator were created for comparison, one with and one without the gamification elements. The results show that the version with gamification achieves a higher level of learning performance. Furthermore, the incidence of simulator sickness is notably reduced when using the simulator with gamification in comparison to the version without gamification elements. In conclusion, the integration of gamification elements into a VR training environment can be beneficial in enhancing learning success while minimizing simulator sickness.
