Abstract
Results of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) studies on the decay of aircraft wake vortices in real atmospheric turbulence conditions are presented. The work is conducted in the framework of projects AWIATOR, C-Wake and Wirbelschleppe. LIDAR measurements of wake vortices in different turbulence regimes of the atmospheric boundary layer are compared to LES data. The impact of atmosphere versus configurational differences on vortex decay is analysed. Moreover, the role of the turbulence shed by wing, flaps, jets, and fuselage of the aircraft itself is discussed and compared to different atmospheric background levels of turbulence. Further, the question of robustness of generic alleviation measures in different atmospheric flow regimes is raised.
