Abstract

This thesis presents the development of a radiometer prototype for a potential application on a Mars weather balloon in the context of a Mars exploration mission proposal by DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt - German Aerospace Center). The instrument measures radiative flux in three dedicated wavelength bands using thermopile sensors, the design is based on heritage from radiometers flown on previous space exploration missions. In this thesis, the design is adapted to the balloon’s flight avionics and its electrical and data interfaces. The work focuses on the development of the electronics schematics design, the printed circuit board layout, and the custom firmware. Furthermore, integration, commissioning, as well as functional and performance testing are discussed. Performance of the instrument is validated and the offset temperature drift of the measured signals as well as the excellent noise performance of the prototype is demonstrated.
