Abstract

The aim of the DLR research project Diabolo is to digitalize the classic methods of conceptual combat aircraft design in an effective way and to couple them with the results of higher-fidelity analysis methods. This coupled approach is intended to ensure that as many aircraft requirements as possible can be sufficiently taken into account in an early phase of the design process. So, the need for complex "adjustments" later in the design process shall be avoided. Using this methodology, a virtual "DLR Future Fighter Demonstrator" (DLR-FFD) is designed. The DLR-FFD is a concept for a generic multi-role fighter aircraft whose requirements are aligned with the needs of a possible future German fighter aircraft. Parts of the project are conducted in a cooperation with Airbus Defence and Space and MTU Aero Engines to align the technological developments and objectives with industrial needs. The present article gives a brief overview of the military aircraft design approach at DLR and provides a demonstration of it by means of a first DLR-FFD design. Diabolo is therefore one example for the duty of DLR's military research to maintain and enhance the capabilities for layout, design and performance assessment of military aircraft to serve the German Federal Ministry of Defence.
