Abstract

Within this work, composite samples with different manufacturing parameters as well as unreinforced pure polymers are subjected to symmetrical and asymmetrical cryogenic cooling using liquid nitrogen. The results show that the composite stacking has a significant effect on the propagation of microcracks, as does the number of simultaneous prepreg tapes used to manufacture the laminate. A finite penetration depth of microcracks from the cryogenically cooled sample side for asymmetrical exposure could be successfully realised and documented using this method, allowing for future experiments and material assessments to more accurately reflect cryogenic storage vessel conditions.
