Abstract

This thesis explores the feasibility and challenges of utilizing small satellites for astrophotometric research, specifically focusing on the observation of comets in extrasolar planetary systems. The study investigates the performance parameters essential for reliable photometric measurements, with a primary emphasis on pointing stability. Through an analysis of image data from a small satellite mission, the pointing accuracy was found to be within an acceptable range of 2.3 arcmin, which is better than initially indicated by the onboard Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS). However, the research identifies jitter as a significant contributor to the noise budget, affecting the overall photometric precision, which was measured to be approximately 2.9%. The limitations of existing sensors onboard the small satellite were also examined, revealing challenges in achieving higher photometric accuracy. The thesis concludes that while small satellites offer promising capabilities for astrophotometric research, enhancements in pointing performance and jitter mitigation are required for more precise measurements. This work serves as a foundation for the continued evolution of small satellites in astrophotometric applications.
