Kurzfassung

The working conditions on board international cruise ships have frequently been criticized. This study interviewed seven European crew members who have worked on board for several years in different departments and occupations. The study reveals that employment contracts differ, and crew members work long hours, seven days a week. Crew members live onboard in small cabins, and their working environment makes colleagues more than just friends. The study also highlights intrinsic and extrinsic reasons why people work on board, and the legal framework provided by the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) and flag states. The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed working conditions with health protocols and rules, and regulations implemented, including COVID tests, mask-wearing, and quarantine procedures. Crew members had limited access to passenger and crew facilities, were denied shore leave, and were separated by department. The research concludes that although the working environment is different from that on shore, working conditions are generally considered good. Despite the negative impact of the pandemic on working conditions, crew members are optimistic that the pandemic’s impact will be temporary.
