Abstract

This lecture will focus on the history and current status of the measurement of the space radiation environment summarized under the context of space radiation dosimetry. It will explain relevant radiation detectors applied for human space flight, going into detail about active and passive radiation detectors, there properties and usage applications. It will also – based on various instruments as MSL-RAD (Mars), LND (Moon), DOSIS 3D (ISS) – describe detection principles of space radiation detectors and provide measured results of space radiation dosimetry for Low Earth Orbit (LEO), for interplanetary space as well as for the surface of Moon and Mars. We will further discuss the differences between personal radiation detectors (for astronauts) and phantom experiments on board the ISS emphasizing and describing in detail the quantities to be measured and applied for dosimetry and radiation risk assessment for humans.
