Abstract

This thesis aims to examine the potential of the superblock concept for the large-scale transformation of cities towards a more sustainable model. Superblocks consist of a series of city blocks, whose interiors are reconfigured into traffic-calmed areas. Through the reduction of areas dedicated to cars, new possibilities arise for other uses of the space. Together with the associated health benefits of reducing motorized transport, the contribution of the superblocks focuses on two main aspects. On the one hand, the provision of new spaces can be dedicated to mitigating the consequences of climate change. On the other hand, the reclaiming of public space and the involvement of local citizens in the redesign of these spaces. Among the many advantages of the model should be pointed out its adaptability to various types of urban structures, and its low requirements for large constructive measures. Since its launch in Barcelona, many other cities have replicated the implementation of similar models. Under the concept of Kiezblock, a comparable model is being pursued in Berlin. Based on interviews with some of the stakeholders involved in the process of establishing the Kiezblok in the district of Neukölln, the participatory processes as well as the traffic calming measures will be examined.
