Kurzfassung
A solution to improve the transport capacity of the railway system without extensive infrastructure measures is a more intensive use of the existing network by reducing the headway of trains: Virtual coupling will allow trains to drive on the same track with very short seperation as a platoon. Moreover dynamic joining and splitting of trains while driving shall provide the flexibility for railway operators to adapt to the changing traffic demands and to use short platforms by long train compounds. Key technologies for this application are low latency radio communications and safe train localization. This talk will provide insights into the VCTS (Virtual Coupled Train Sets) concept, recent research and developments on the relevant railway communication and localization technologies, as well as on operational scenarious, distance control and aerodynamic aspects.
