Abstract

This paper outlines the design and CFD-simulation based investigation of a tangential injection device as a means to postpone cavitation inception in an inducer. It is shown that the pump inlet pressure at which vapor first forms at the leading edge of the inducer blade is lower for a configuration which includes a tangential injection device when compared to an otherwise identical inducer without flow rotation in the inlet. The presented design is based on the geometry and typical operating parameters of DLRs LUMEN (Liquid Upper Stage deMonstator ENgine) liquid methane fuel pump.
