Abstract

Thermoplastic continuous fiber-reinforced 3D-printing filaments from carbon fiber roving with high filament number are yet not free available in market and are facing strong technical challenges due to the difficult impregnation with highly viscous melt. A new approach for the production of such 3D-printing filaments showing a fiber volume content of up to 50% made from dry carbon fiber roving with 12 000 single filaments (12K) is presented. Described semi-finished products are of high interest especially for the functionalization of multi-curved shells in transportation industry, enabling a targeted stiffening and strengthening for novel resource efficient lightweight design concepts based on additive manufacturing.
