This presentation shows a novel approach to include turbulent wedges in local correlation-based transition models. Turbulent wedges are often found in high Reynolds number wind tunnel tests of natural laminar flow configurations due to surface imperfections or surface contamination. In free flight, there is a wide variety of effects that give rise to local turbulent flow on a laminar configuration, thereby changing the aircraft performance, aerodynamics, and aeroelastic characteristics. Therefore, there is a need to include the effect of turbulent wedges in Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes transition models for the assessment of novel laminar transport aircraft or the validation of transition models based on wind tunnel data at high Reynolds numbers.
