Abstract

The presentation concerns the legal evaluation of technological progress in the international maritime sector. It assumes that disruptive technologies change the circumstances in which an international treaty was drafted leading to an incompatibility of the current legal framework with such innovative products. To illustrate this phenomenon, the presentation introduces the project of the company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM). Using an autonomous and modular design, this special kind of ship seems not to fit into the existing law of the sea.
