Abstract

The DLR small satellite mission BIRD is dedicated to the remote sensing of hot spot events from space like vegetation fires, coal seam fires or active volcanoes. For these objectives a new generation of infrared array sensors are developed suitable for mall satellite missions. The performance of these sensors will be demon-strated with the micro satellite mission BIRD. Some new small satellite technologies are devel-oped to fulfil the high scientific requirements using a micro satellite mission with the total mass of the complete spacecraft being 92 kg. The paper describes mission objectives, the payload, the spacecraft and some results of the BIRD mis-sion.
