Abstract

The potential of a new small Bi-spectral Infrared Detection (BIRD) satellite system for the detection and quantitative characterization of high-temperature events on the Earth surface is discussed. BIRD was successfully piggy-back launched by an Indian Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C3) in a cicular Sun-synchronous orbit on 22 October 2001. Images of wildfires in the area of Sydney, Australia, obtained in January 2002, illustrate the fire recognition potential of BIRD.
