Abstract

We discuss techniques and roblems associated with estimating the size distribution of near-Earth asteroids and descirbe plans for a detailed study of the hazards posed by objects of various sizes on regional and global scales. In particular, the large uncertainties introduced into estimates of the total population of NEAs by the limitations of the search programmes and lack of knowledge of the albedo distribution of NEAs are emphasized. We investigate the potential of a computer simulation of the orbital development of a population of NEAs, based on the best estimates of the size distribution if the total NEA population, to provide a basis for detailed study of the hazards posed by these objects.
