We present our current research on lossy data compression with adaptive mesh refinement techniques. By combining the ESM submodel framework MESSy with the adaptive mesh library t8code we can significantly reduce the file size of simulation output files. Using adaptive meshes allows for a very fine grained error control. For example specifying different compression errors for different refions of the atmosphere.
