Abstract

The lecture presents results of a US-German cooperation on helicopter rotor wake measurement techniques, which started decades ago and goes on. Differential Infrared Thermography (DIT) is based on the recording and analysis of infrared images for the detection of the laminar turbulent boundary layer transition on helicopter's main rotor blades. The presentation covers further techniques for optical flow diagnostics that have been developed and used in the frame of this cooperation like particle image velocimetry (PIV) used for flight testing and background oriented schlieren techniques (BOS) applied for the same purpose.
