Abstract

The first simulations for the in-situ consolidation (ISC) process were conducted with flat panels of representative laminate layup and a PEEK material model. The setup of the propagating heat source as a numeric boundary condition proved to be a challenge with the Ansys Mechanical GUI due to missing customization options. This issue could be solved with a script based setup process. This script is highly adaptable and automated and can easily be implemented into optimization routines. The results of these simulations could be verified by experiments. Consequently, the model was transferred to curved structures to allow ISC simulation of the thermoplastic upper shell demonstrator (for MFFD). The results will prove useful to accompany the manufacturing process and to optimize the processing parameters.
