Abstract
The hypersonic point-to-point SpaceLiner under development in DLR Bremen is a revolutionary passenger transport system based on high-performance rocket. As such, manages lot of energy and therefore is linked to inherent safety challenges since, in extreme cases, it might explode. Separation motors for a capsule acting as emergency escape system, in case of a catastrophic failure, are designed and dimensioned with regards to a worst-case scenario. This scenario occurs at the launch pad due to maximum amount of unburnt fuel, highest atmospheric pressure (which causes most severe thrust losses and highest overpressure shockwaves in case of explosion) and the need for a minimum altitude from ground for a safe descent and landing by parachutes. A further analysis of the capsule escape in others critical trajectory points is done. As result, different options for Capsule Separation Motors, considering Solid Rocket Motors, SpaceX’ SuperDraco Engines and a new concept of Liquid propellant Engines (based on SuperDraco’s performances), are shown and a Trade-off could be done. The overall conclusion is that each option fulfils the considered requirements and limitations but not all of them are interesting for the rescue capsule of the SpaceLiner. More work could be performed in the point of view of structural mass analysis, propellant composition and constraints linked to fragmentation debris originated from a possible explosion.
