Abstract

The simulation of turbulent flows with adverse-pressure gradients is crucial for accurate predictions of complex flows, e.g. around aircraft at the border of the flight envelope. In this work, we conduct a fundamental assessment of embedded wall-modelled LES of a generic adverse-pressure-gradient flow at two rather large Reynolds numbers. The simulations employ the unstructured finite-volume solver DLR-TAU and combine the Improved Delayed DES with a synthetic turbulence generator. The simulation setup is shown to be robust w.r.t. several sensitivities, such as grid resolution, domain span or the method to inject synthetic turbulence. In comparison to the measurements, the present simulations yield a somewhat delayed and smaller separation than observed in the experiment at both Reynolds numbers.
